During spring and summer you get to enjoy your beautiful garden to the fullest. Yet it takes a bit of planning, to ensure you’ll get to revel in these gorgeous flowers again next year. Fall is a great time to start to plan your garden design. But where to begin? There are just so many! In this article, we’ll give you a starting point and some ideas on how to create a beautiful garden design.

A design can be built from several starting points and developed from there. This way you can keep a bit of structure in your decision-making. We divided these into a key characteristic of a flower bulb and a concept. Both are fine to begin with and able to combine with the other along the way.

Starting with a characteristic

Flower bulbs and flowers are unique and beautiful in their own way. They all have different characteristics to take into account and consideration when you are planning your garden design.

Color scheme

Biodiversity garden

Flower bulbs and flowers are available in all kinds of colors. A simple but effective way to start your garden design is to pick a color you wish to bring forward or a color scheme. For instance, tulips come in an array of colors, such as red, pink, white, purple and yellow. Each color has its own meaning as well. If you were to give someone a bulb for their garden, you can wish them good wishes with pink tulips.

Blooming time

Most flower bulbs and flowers bloom either in spring or in summer. This gives you the opportunity to choose a starting point on which bulbs to plant when and where. Do keep in mind that when they are done blooming, the flowers will leave some foliage behind.

Shapes and height

Besides the size of the flower bulb itself, the flower that’ll grow out of it will have a certain height as well. If you prefer to have an even deck of flowers, take into consideration how high the flowers will become. Furthermore, you can start with a shape you’d like and go from there.

Annuals and perennials

If you feel like changing up the design every year, you could focus on annual flower bulbs. These bulbs bloom once and to see them again you’ll have to plant new bulbs. Perennials will bloom every year sometimes with more blooms than one per season.

Starting with a concept

While a characteristic is a good place to start, you could kick it up a notch by starting with a concept. Of course the above mentioned aspects of flowers and flower bulbs will be a factor in the concepts as well. Here are some concepts to which you could model your bulb garden design after.

Container with color

Whether you put the flower bulbs in the ground or in a container, they will grow beautifully. And this has two advantages. One is that you can store the portable containers during winter to protect the flower bulbs. And the other is that you can put the color precisely where you want.

Different color schemes

Why go with one color when you can have multiple? Plant your bulbs in sizable groups for the most impact, so at least 12 larger ones and 50 or more small flower bulbs. This gives you the opportunity to experiment and combine various colors.

Formal or informal

Not a bulb, but a manner of planting can make it seem formal or informal. If you plant a group of bulbs in an irregular manner, you can mirror the way they would grow in the wild. To appear more formal you can plant them alongside a path. This gives off a more manicured look.

Layered effect

As discussed before, different flowers reach different heights. To create a layered effect or more of a depth perception, you can plant several strips with various heights.

Plant according to a view

If you have a great view upon your garden, this might be the starting point in your bulb garden design. Choose a view, mark spots in your garden and start planting the flower bulbs from there to create a gorgeous picture.

Tulips

Bloomtime

Spring, summer, annuals and perennials. If you combine these within a design, you’ll get to enjoy a lively garden all year round.

Last but not least, you could edge your garden with a border of small flowers. Grape hyacinth is a great example. Furthermore, you could experiment with different kinds of flowers in your garden, such as dahlias and calla lilies.
