What types of tulips are there and what are the differences?

Tulips are worldly famous. Without a doubt, the most famous flower bulb is the tulip bulb. Especially the single tulip where the simplicity provides the ultimate spring feeling. The tulip season starts in January with a kick off on National Tulip Day, which is celebrated in Amsterdam on the third Saturday of January. There are about 150 types of tulips in the world and more than 3000 varieties. Here are a few types:

Single Tulip 

The single tulip is considered the standard tulip. It is the best known species. This tulip is commonly used in tulip bouquets and flower boxes. Single tulips are available in many different colors, except blue or black. The single tulip comes in two varieties: the early and the late. The single early tulips have strong short stems and flower in early April. These are therefore suitable for standing in places with a lot of wind. The single late tulips have large strong stems and flowers in May. These are 8” taller than the early ones whichv reach a height of 16”.

Tulip Double Sunlover

The name of the double sunlover tulip actually speaks for itself. The double petals cause the flower of the double tulip to increase in volume. The flowers can reach a diameter of 4”. The double tulip is also available in the early and late varieties. Early double tulips flower in April and reach a height of 20”. Late double tulips flower a month later in May and reach a higher height than the single double tulips.

Tulip Triumph

The triumph tulips are a cross of early and late single tulips. They have the classic shape of a tulip that is cone-shaped at the beginning and changes to an oval shape after opening. Triumph tulips bloom on strong stems and have the largest amount of colors. There is more color choice because the triumph tulips can also be two-toned. Triumph tulips flower in mid-April and reach a height of 16”.
