Flower bulbs are little flower packages that are programmed to grow into beautiful colored flowers. You will need to have some patience for the results, but it’s all worth the wait. With basic knowledge of how to plant flower bulbs and some handy tips, everyone can plant and grow beautiful flowers with flower bulbs.
Planting flower bulbs
Each kind of flower bulb has different units, but the basis of each bulb is the same. These simple steps explain how to plant your flower bulbs properly. This allows you to fully enjoy growing your own bulbs.
- Choose a place in your garden where you want to plant the flower bulbs. You can plant your bulbs anywhere in your garden, as long as the soil drains well and it has many sun hours. Flower bulbs like the sun, but don’t like wet feet, so the water must be able to flow away.
- Before planting the bulbs, you must first mix the soil. You can mix the soil with some organic matter such as compost or peat moss. If you have a dense ground, like clay soil, you can mix it with sand. Because of this the soil is optimal for the flower bulbs and enough nutrients enter the soil. Dig the soil so it’s loose and workable to a depth of at least 8”.
- Create small holes in the ground following the recommendation on the label for planting depth. This should be between 4” and 6” deep. When planting multiple bulbs together, the bulbs should be in separate holes that are 4″ apart.
- Place the flower bulb in the hole with the pointy side up or the roots down. If you are not sure which side is the top or bottom of the bulb, plant the bulb on it’s side. So in case you don’t get it right, the bulb will still find its way to the top.
- Now that all of the bulbs have been planted, fill the holes again with soil. Lightly compress the soil, but don’t pack it. Newly planted flower bulbs should be watered well to get settled in the ground and encourage root growth. There is no need to water the bulbs continuously, unless you live in an area with low rainfall.
At what depth should which flower bulbs be planted?
Not every flower bulb requires the same planting depth. The depth of the flower bulbs is determined by the size of the flower bulb. A general rule is to plant big bulbs about 8” deep and small bulbs about 4” deep. If you are not sure if it’s a big or a small flower bulb, you can take the general rule of thumb to plant the flower bulb two or three times as deep as the bulb is tall.
The recommended planting depth for all types of tulips is 4”. This is the same as Blooms, Bees & Butterflies Landscape Garden Pastel Shades and the Wild Flower Mix. These contain tulip bulbs, daffodil bulbs, muscari bulbs, anemone bulbs and crocus bulbs. The Cottage Garden Woodland Garden Bags, the Cottage Garden Tulip Garden Bags and the Blooms, Bees & Butterflies Landscape Garden Pink Shades have a recommended planting depth of 6”.
