Together with gladioli, lilies, and begonias, the dahlias are one of the most important and popular summer-flowering “bulbs”. Dahlias are widely cultivated due to their huge range of colors and flower types available, their many uses, and fairly easy cultivation.
Some two hundred years ago, the first Dahlia arrived in Western Europe from its native habitat in Mexico. Nowadays, it is difficult to find this original dahlia among the current dahlia assortment since flower enthusiasts and growers have done much in the way of developing new types, shapes, and colors.
Dahlias are only winter hardy in zones 8-11, but gardeners in zones 3-7 can grow dahlia as annuals. Plant the tubers in spring, and the plants will be blooming by mid to late summer.
Dahlias cannot tolerate frost. Many people pot up dahlias indoors 6 weeks prior to planting them outdoors to get a “jump” on the season and thus get earlier blooms. Plant outdoors only after the last spring ground frost. In fall, dig up the tubers and bring them inside before the first fall ground frost. Store the tubers in a cool but frost-free spot until re-planting them next spring. Pinching out the main stems 3 weeks after planting encourages a bushier habit. Taking off the faded blooms during the summer months will prolong the flowering period.
What are hardiness zones? Ranging from 1 to 13, a hardiness zone is just the range of possible temperatures in a geographical area – specifically relating to plant growth. The lower the number, the colder the possible temperatures, and the higher, the hotter.
Where to Plant: Our Dahlia bulbs are suitable for planting in USDA hardiness zones 7 – 10. They require a sunny place in the garden (should include at least a couple of hours morning sun).
How to Plant: Summer bulbs, corms or tubers are planted at a depth twice as deep as the bulb is tall. Begonias and dahlias, however, are exceptions since they should be planted just below the surface. Arrange small varieties 4 inches apart; this is a good distance for them. The distance apart for dahlias is 5 inches, for begonias 25 cm, for lilies 30 cm and for dahlias even 40 cm.
When to Plant: Planting can start in April but should wait until the risk of frost is past. If cold winter temperatures continue long into spring, planting should wait a while. You can plant summer bulbs until the end of May.
