Plan when you’d like to see your flowers blooming
You have made the great decision to plant flower bulbs in your garden! You have bought and cared for your flower bulbs and now is the time to start planting. A great place to start is to figure out when you would like to see them bloom. When your bulbs will bloom correlates with the moment you plant them. Different kinds of flowers have a different flowering period.
In our previous article we gave you more information on when your flower bulbs should be planted. The best time to plant is between September and December, yet it is very important to plant them before the first frost. There are spring flowering and summer flowering bulbs. Daffodils, tulips and crocuses are examples of the first kind. Dahlias, anemones and callas belong in the second category.
Prepare the ground before planting your bulbs
Before you start planting the flower bulbs in the ground it is important to loosen the soil. You can do this by digging the soil with a shovel or special bulb planter. This ensures that the water runs well through the soil and that the bulb does not remain in wet soil for too long and gets enough air. Once you’ve done this you can measure out where the bulbs will go. The distance between the flower bulbs depends on how you would like it to look when they bloom. If you prefer a dense bed of flowers you can put them a little closer to each other and if you prefer the latter you can plant them a bit further away. However, it does depend on how big your flower bulb is, the measurement for bigger bulbs is about 5 inches apart and for smaller bulbs 2 to 3 inches apart. The depth of the bulbs is linked to the size of the bulbs as well. A rule for the depth is 2 to 3 times as deep as the diameter of the bulb. So for example for daffodils and hyacinths it’s about 6 to 8 inches and crocuses about 4 inches. Make sure that you water the flower bulbs directly after planting them. This stimulates the growth of the roots, which in turn will make your flower bulbs more cold and frost resistant.
Being in your garden will give you peace of mind and it is a fun way to spend some time out in the fresh air. You’ll have a beautiful result when the flower bulbs bloom.
